Modbus RTU is a communication protocol which specifications are publicly available and is widely used as a means of communication between industrial electronic devices.
It is relatively easy to implement, and since data can be transferred as is, it is said to have few restrictions for vendors.
RS485 is used as the communication medium for the physical layer (*1).
